Julius Lothar Meyer was a German chemist. He was one of the pioneers in developing the first periodic table of chemical elements. Both Mendeleev and Meyer worked with Robert Bunsen. He never used his first given name, and was known throughout his life simply as Lothar Meyer.

Julius Lothar Meyer was born in Varel, Germany, on Aug. 19, 1830. Today’s Google Doodle honors this German scientist on his 190th birthday. Meyer played an important role in the discovery of the periodic law of chemical elements. He was also a pioneer of the earliest periodic tables. After conducting studies in the field of medicine, he earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry in the year 1858. His thesis work was based on the effects of carbon monoxide on blood. Dr. Meyer had recognized that oxygen combines with the hemoglobin present in blood. In 1864, Meyer published a seminal textbook on the “Modern Chemical Theory.” Meyer’s research paper published in 1870 was indeed groundbreaking. In this paper, he demonstrated the relationship between atomic volume and atomic weight and this provided strong evidence for the periodic law. Meyer also did some research on the structure of benzene. Dr. Meyer got heavy recognition for his published line chart of atomic volumes as functions of atomic weights. Julius Lothar Meyer is a German chemist. He is the contemporary rival of Dmitri Mendeleev. Both scientists worked with Robert Bunsen for 5 years. He was the first professor of chemistry at the University of Tübingen and continued in this position until his death. He showed that the physical and chemical properties of the elements change depending on the atomic weight, and he was one of the first to propose a periodic table grouping elements with common properties.
