Nehemiah, the city walls

As God”s covenant, the temple in Jerusalem was rebuilt in 70 years. Although in appearance it was less than that of Solomon”s temple, but even when David said that he would build a temple, God spoke of the spiritual function of the temple, not the appearance and size of the temple. Therefore, Zerubbabel Temple will serve that role for a while, will also disappear from history, and everything will be complete through the coming of Jesus Christ, the true temple. Now that the temple that represents Jesus Christ in a sense is completed, God”s people must live a life of walking with God centered around the temple and Jesus Christ. However, there is a temple, but the lack of a wall still threatened the temple, and it was difficult to function as a temple. So the story of Nehemiah, the leader who led the third return from captivity, rebuilding the wall is the book of Nehemiah.

Jerusalem torn down, gates burnt Nehemiah”s appearance in the Bible is after the first captivity, the start and halt of tht temple construction, the restart and completion of the temple construction through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah, and the activities of Mordecai and Esther. In terms of time, it was 90 years since the first prisoner return, and 70 years since the completion of the Zerubbabel Temple. Nehemiah was the king”s cup-bearer in the Persian palace (Neh 1:11). At that time, he hears a news from his brother from Judah, Hanani, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” (Neh 1:3). Precisely, this text means, “the city walls collapsed and the gates burned”. Now Nehemiah must make a choice. Nehemiah, though a foreigner as a captive, had a high office in Persia. Over 140 years have passed since the fall of Judah in South and the fall of the temple in Jerusalem, and no matter how educated Nehemiah were by the scattered Jews, he must have been a man born in Persia, fluent in Persian science and language, and had a promising future in this world. However, if Nehemiah were a man of this world, he would not have wondered about the circumstances of the people of Judah and Jerusalem, and he would not have asked about it (Neh 1:2). Nehemiah was a man of God, people of God”s kingdom.

Me and my father”s house have sinned Nehemiah heard the words of his younger brother Hanani, wept, mourned for a few days, and fasted before God (Neh 1:5-11) and prayed, “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses. Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’ They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand. Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” (Neh 1:5-11). Nehemiah”s prayer was a prayer for God”s mercy (Neh 1:5), a prayer to confess the sins of Israel (Neh 1:6,7), and a prayer that holds God”s covenant (Neh 1:8,9) and a prayer for God”s grace (Neh 1:10,11).

God’s good hand helps me Nehemiah said to the Persian king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.” (Neh 2:5) and with the help of God”s hand, they recieved a letter from the king to the governors on the west side of the river to get to Judah safely, as well as a letter to the keeper of the royal park to receive the timber needed for the rebuilding of the wall (Neh 2:7,8). The king even made the army officers and cavalry go with Nehemiah (Neh 2:9). Wiith the good will of God”s people for the kingdom of God, God also helped. When God becomes the subject, it prospers.

Let”s not be disgraced again by building Jerusalem”s walls With the heart God gave him to Jersalem, Nehemiah did not inform the princes and personally investigated all the circumstances he has heard (Neh 2:11-16). And when the time came, Nehemiah said to the princes “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” and told the princes about how God”d hand helped them and what the kings said. And said everyone should come together to build the walls (Neh 2:17,18). Eventually, the rebuilding of the wall began, and Nehemiah recorded a list of those who participated in it (Neh 3:1-32). High priest Eliashib, who took the lead in the reconstruction, rose up with his brothers and priests, and built two gates and consecrated them, attached doors, and built a wall to consecrate it from the Tower of Hammea to the Tower of Hananel.

Difficulties from outside and from inside Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite, and Gezer the Arabian heard the news of the rebuilding of the wall, with Nehemiah and the princes at the center, despised Nehemiah and the princes laughed at him and said, “What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” (Neh 2:19). They were very worried when they heard that someone who wanted to make the descendants of Israel prosperous came. Nehemiah told them, “The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding, but as for you, you have no share in Jerusalem or any claim or historic right to it.” (Neh 2:20). They also mocked saying, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are? (Neh 4:2), “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!” (Neh 4:3). Regarding their mockery, Nehemiah prayed to God entrustung it in His hands by saying, “Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.” (Neh 4:4,5). Then, the construction of the wall continued, and the wall reached half the height (Neh 4:6). Then, again, the Bible showed that the disturbers saw “the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry. They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and stir up trouble against it.” (Neh 4:7,8). Even this time, Nehemiah prayed to God and had a watchman defend and night (Neh 4:9). This time, the people of Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.” (Neh 4:10). And the enemies interfering said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.” (Neh 4:11). Even the people of Judah who lived near the enemies came from all over and said more than ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.” (Neh 4:12). Some of the people of Judah joined them. So Nehemiah encouraged the people to stand with swords, spears, and bows and separated them (Neh 4:13-14). Eventually, God defeated their schemes (Neh 4:15). From then on, Nehemiah also had half of his men working, half of them wearing armor, holding spears, shields, and bows, officials camping behind the people, thosing building the city had a sword around their waste, those with the trumpet was kept near, and everyone was to gather at the sound of the trumpet (Neh 4:16-20). Half of the people who were constructing the wall held spears from dawn to the night, and were told to sleep in Jerusalem with their men at night, stand on the alert, and work during the day. Everyone, including Nehemiah, did not take off their clothes and take their weapons, even when they went to fetch water (Neh 4:21-23). Nehemiah did not forget the words “God will fight for us!” (Neh 4:20). Nehemiah never ceased to pray among all difficulties and the princes and people overcame the situation by doing the best they can.

Difficulty unseen If the difficulties coming from enemies and obstructers were visible difficulties, invisible difficulties were internally growing. It was the “loan shark” business among the same people from Jews. The nobles and officials of the people were paying high interest to the same Jews (Neh 5:7). Eventually the resentment and outcry of the poor people bursted (Neh 5:1-5) and hearing the cry of the people, Nehemiah carefully rebuked the nobles and civil servants (Ne 5:7-11) that they finally swore, “We will give it back, and we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.” (Neh 5:12), the whole congregation said Amen, praised God, and did as they said (Neh 5:12,13). When everyone was in a tough situation, Nehemiah did not eat food allotted to the governor like other govenors, nor did he ask for some. This is because the people”s labor was heavy (Neh 5:14-18).

Unstoppable internal and external difficulties Now, the reconstruction of the walls were about to be completed. Only the door had to be attached to the gates (Neh 6:1). At this time, the interferers and enemies sent a person to Nehemiah asking him to meet them, but in fact, they wanted to kill him (Neh 6:1,2). When Nehemiah did not go, they continuously called Nehemiah four times but Nehemiah only said, “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” (Neh 6:3,4). Then they sent a letter with an open envelope that said, “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.” (Neh 6:6,7). They deliberately made it so the person delivering the letter would open the letter, read it, and spread false infomration. Even here, Nehemiah said, “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.” (Neh 6:8), praying to God, “Now strengthen my hands.” (Neh 6:9). It was because all this was to make the Israelites fearful and their hands were weary, so that history could be stopped and prevented from being accomplished (Neh 6:9). Difficulties came from outside, but also inside. A man named Shemaiah told Nehemiah to go to the sanctuary of the temple where only the priests could enter, because the enemies and obstructers would come to kill him, but this too was a lie to scare Nehemiah with evil words after receiving bribes from his enemies (Neh 6:10-13). Even at this time, Nehemiah kept his place, discerned the lies, and overcame it by praying to God (Neh 6:14). When the temple was built with the governor Zerubbabel and Yeshua the priest at the center, there were initially Samaritan interferers (Ezr 4:1-24), and when rebuilding the halted temple, there were interferers again (Ezr 5:3-17). And there are also interferers when rebuilding the collapsed and ruined walls (Neh 2:10-20). We must clearly know. Even in the process of Jesus Christ, the temple, becoming the master within us and in building a distinct life living with Jesus Christ as master, Satan”s interference never ceases. Just as there was Amalek in the wilderness and the Philistines in Canaan.

Knowing that God has accomplished this work Finally, it ended 52 days after the start of the wall history. And when all the enemies and the surrounding Gentiles heard this, they were all afraid and greatly discouraged because they knew that God had accomplished this history (Neh 6:15, 16). God did it. Only God is worthy to be glorified. After the doors were set in place, God was feared, outstanding people were raised to rule Jerusalem, and they were told not to open the gates when the sun was hot but bar them when shut (Neh 7:1-4). It is because if the “temple” is protected by the “wall”, then the wall is protected by the “gate”. So, taking the gate is like taking an entire city. And finally, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some people, the Nethinims, and all the children of Israel all lived in their cities (Neh 7:73).

Now what to do next There are gaps in time, but we have to figure out the order well. Throughout the history of Israel, they proved that there is no hope in a nation of this world, and they perished from this world. They died. And with the return of captivity, a new life began around the temple, that is, Jesus Christ, but the walls were torn down and the gates burned down, making life centered around the temple difficult. And finally, the wall that separated and distinguished the temple from the world was completed. Now, if the gates are kept well, the walls will be strong, and if the walls are strong, life centered around the temple will be strengthened. So, Nehemiah made sure to manage the gates well (Neh 7:1-4). So what should be done next? It is to return to the Word. So Nehemiah had all the people assemble in the square before the Water Gate, standing on a high wooden platform built for Ezra the teacher of the Law, took the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel, and read it from daybreak till noon in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand, and all the people stood there listening attentively and the Levites made the law clear to them (Neh 8:1-8). When the people heard this word, they cried, ate, drank, and sent portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they understood the words that had been made known to them (Neh 8:9-12). And the next day, the heads of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, together with Ezra the teacher of the Law, knew that it was time to observe the feast of the Feast of Tabernacle through the word of God, and they kept the Feast of Tabernacle and rejoiced again (Neh 8:13-17). Ezra the teacher of the Law read the book of the Law of God every day from day one to the last (Neh 8:18). And they fasted, wearing sackclothes and putting dust on their heads, separated themselves from all foreigners, stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the Lord their God (Neh 9:1-3). Also, the Levites went up to the altar and cried out to God with a loud voice, “You alone are the Lord” (Neh 9:6,7), proclaiming God, and confessing the rebellion history of which the people were constantly rebellion to God, who protected from the time of Abraham, during their life in the wilderness of Exodus, and in Canaan. And they clearly declared that because of their sins that they have become slaves in the land that God has given them and again made and sealed a strong covenant with God (Neh 9:9-38). And those who have sealed were recorded (Neh 10:1-27) and the contents of their covenant were recorded (Neh 10:28-39). Although they were not saved by keeping the contents of the covenant, they are doing their best not to return to the place of their sins again.

Those who want to live in Jerusalem Their living quarters were now relocated around the temple. The leaders and a tenth of the people lived in the holy city of Jerusalem, and the people commended all who volunteered to live in Jerusalem (Neh 11:1,2). Jerusalem was a great place to live a religious life, but it was the most dangerous place to be attacked again. The Bible records the names of those who came to Jerusalem centered around their representations (Neh 11:3-36) and the names of priests and Levites (Neh 12:1-26). Likewise, all the names of God”s people will be recorded in the spiritual New Jerusalem. Afterwards, to dedicate the walls of Jersalem, they looked for Levites from various places and took them to Jerusalem where to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres (Neh 12:27-47).

Distinguish and separate to find and organize their place The role of the wall is division. The wall is needed to embrace the temple and live a life separate from the world. So they now separate the Ammonites and Moabites, who were among them, according to the Law of Moses (Neh 13:1-3). In addition, because the Levites did not recieve their portions, were unable to keep their place in the temple, and went back to their own fields, Nehemiah rebuked the officials, put the Levite”s portions in storerooms and put the Levites back in their place (Neh 13:4-13). And Nehemiah made the people keep the Sabbath holy, prevented outsiders from selling things on the Sabbath, and drived out those who slept outside the city before the Sabbath to prevent them from selling things on the Sabbath (Neh 13:15-22). In addition, Nehemiah rebuked and cursed those who married the Gentiles, beat some of them, pulled their hair, were on alert, and said that the cause of Solomon”s destruction was marriage with Gentiles. Nehemiah even drove out one of the sons of Joiada, the grandson of Eliashib, the high priest, who became the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite (Neh 13:23-28). Nehemiah prayed constantly in all things (Neh 5:19, 6:14, 13:14,22,29,31).

The story of God”s people, God”s zeal and love for the people who accepts Jesus, the temple, as the center, and reveals God as God”s holy people through life seperated and distinguished from the world with the wall continues.
