Notes: The meaning of 찾아내다 is very similar to simply using 찾다, but 찾아내다 is more likely to be used when looking for something that is difficult to find. Through this difficult search, the thing ends up being “revealed,” much like the meaning “to find out” would have in English. Examples:

= I’m worried that the landlord will find the shattered mirror 오늘 밤까지 이 문제에 해결방안을 찾아내세요

Introduction
In the previous two lessons, you learned about a variety of situations where you can use “~ㄹ/을까(요).” In this lesson, you will learn another way that you can use this grammatical form. In this lesson, you will learn about adding ~ㄹ/을까 봐 to sentence to indicate that the speaker is worried about something. Let’s get started.
I am worried about/that…: ~ㄹ/을까 봐
Before we get into anything, let’s talk about the word “걱정하다.” This is actually a weird verb because there doesn’t seem to be any meaningful difference between ‘걱정하다’ and ‘걱정되다.’ Because ‘걱정하다’ ends in ‘하다,’ you would think that it would have the active meaning of “to worry” (as in, I am worrying my brother). Conversely, because ‘걱정되다’ ends in ‘되다,’ you would think that it would have the meaning of “to be worried” (as in, I am worried about my brother). The weird thing about this word, is that it appears that both 하다 and 되다 forms have the passive meaning of “to be worried” and not “to (make) worry.”
Though it appears you can use ‘걱정되다’ and ‘걱정하다’ to mean essentially the same thing, personally, whenever I talk about myself being worried, or somebody else being worried, I always say “걱정되다.”
The most common time you will see 걱정하다 being used is when telling somebody not to be worried.
For example:
걱정하지 마! = Don’t worry!
Using 되다 in this case is awkward:
걱정되지 마!
Anyways, now that we know that, let’s talk about the grammatical form ~ㄹ/을까 봐. When putting this at the end of a sentence, the speaker is indicating that he or she is worried about the clause before ~ㄹ/을까 봐 occurring.
걱정되다 is usually placed after ~ㄹ/을까 봐 in this usage. For example:
시험을 잘 못 볼까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that I won’t do well on the exam
비가 올까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that it will rain
그녀가 나를 좋아하지 않을까 봐 걱정돼 = I’m worried that she won’t like me
논문을 여름까지 끝낼 수 없을까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that I won’t finish my thesis by summer
If you want to say that you are worried about something in the past, you can conjugate the verb/adjective before “~ㄹ/을까 봐.” For example:
시험을 잘 못 봤을까 봐 걱정돼요 = I am worried that I didn’t do well on the exam
비가 왔을까 봐 걱정돼요 = I am worried that it rained
You can also conjugate 걱정되다 into the past tense to indicate that you were worried:
시험을 잘 못 봤을까 봐 걱정되었어요 = I was worried that I didn’t do well on the exam
비가 왔을까 봐 걱정되었어요 = I was worried that it rained
그녀가 나를 좋아하지 않을까 봐 걱정되었어 = I was worried that she didn’t like me
Often you will see 걱정되다 omitted in these types of sentences, and the sentence just ends with ~ㄹ/을까 봐. Usually when 걱정되다 is omitted, the meaning of it being there is implied in the sentence. For example:
시험을 잘 못 볼까 봐 = I’m worried that I won’t do well on the exam
비가 올까 봐 = I’m worried that it will rain
그녀가 나를 좋아하지 않을까 봐 = I’m worried that she won’t like me
논문을 여름까지 끝낼 수 없을까 봐 = I’m worried that I won’t finish my thesis by summer
In the previous lesson, you saw how ~ㄹ/을까 봐 can be added to the end of a sentence to indicate intention. You can see how one might be confused between these meanings because the grammar within these sentences is identical. For example:
그 영화를 볼까 봐 = I intend to watch that movie
시험을 잘 못 볼까 봐 = I’m worried that I won’t do well on the exam
Just like many other things in Korean, the context can clarify the specific meaning. For example, what would happen if you heard the sentences above and confused their meanings
그 영화를 볼까 봐 = I am worried that I will watch that movie
시험을 잘 못 볼까 봐 = I am thinking about doing bad on the exam
As you can see, the sentences above (with their meanings changed) are illogical when used like that. Of course, you could find a context where they might be appropriate, but I’d be hard pressed to find a situation where you would want to say “I am thinking about doing bad on the exam.” By paying attention to the context and the information within the sentence, it is usually clear what meaning is being implied.
Below are many more examples:
예산이 없을까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that there isn’t enough budget
다과가 부족할까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that there won’t be enough refreshments
작업을 완료할 수 없을까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that we won’t be able to finish the job
그 소리가 학생들을 방해할까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that the sound will distract the students
경찰관이 저에게 총을 쏠까 봐 걱정됐어요 = I was worried that the police officer would shoot me
집주인이 부서진 거울을 찾아낼까 봐 걱정돼요 = I’m worried that the landlord will find the shattered mirror
In each of the examples above, the word 걱정되다 can be removed with no real difference in meaning. These types of constructions are more likely to be used in the middle of a conversation. For example, if somebody asks you “Why are you worried?” you can eliminate 걱정되다 from the sentence because it can be assumed. However, when walking into a room and starting a conversation, you will be more likely to hear “걱정되다” used in these sentences.

~ㄹ/을까 봐 can also be used as a connector between two clauses. We will talk about how to do this in the next section.
I am worried that/about, so…: ~ㄹ/을까 봐
In the previous section, you learned about adding ~ㄹ/을까 봐 to the end of sentences. You learned that these sentences can end with the word 걱정되다 or simply end with ~ㄹ/을까 봐. By placing another clause after ~ㄹ/을까 봐, you can create the meaning of “I am worried about/that, so….” For example:
비가 올까 봐 우산을 가져왔어요
= I was worried that it would rain, so I brought an umbrella
비가 올까 봐 우산을 가져올 거예요
= I am worried that it will rain, so I will bring an umbrella
Notice that the tense of the sentence is determined by the final verb and not the verb that ~ㄹ/을까 봐 is added to. Below are many more examples:
저의 여자 친구가 슬플까 봐 그녀를 위해 꽃을 샀어요
= I am worried that my girlfriend will be sad so I bought her flowers
그것이 너무 비쌀까 봐 돈을 많이 가져왔어요
= I’m worried that it will be too expensive, so I brought more money
집주인이 물이 흘러나올까 봐 지붕을 수리했어요

This expression indicates that the speaker did, or is doing, the action in the following clause out of worry or fear that the situation or action in the preceding clause has occurred or will occur. The 보다 of -(으)ㄹ까 봐 means to guess or think something. This expression can also be used in the form -(으)ㄹ까 봐서.

[Grammar] -(으)ㄹ까 봐
Verb/adjective+(으)ㄹ까 봐
means ‘be afraid of/that’, it is a short form for -(으)ㄹ까 봐(서) which is ‘because (someone) is afraid of/that’. It often comes with ‘걱정이다’, ‘걱정이 되다’or ‘걱정하다’. For example,
비가 너무 많이 올까 봐 걱정이에요. I am afraid that it will rain too much.
우리 아들이 나를 닮을까 봐 걱정이에요. I am afraid that my son is going to resemble me.
발표할 때 한국어를 틀릴까 봐 걱정이에요. I am afraid that I will make mistakes in Korean on the presentation.
아이가 길을 잃어버릴 까 봐 걱정이 됐어요. I am afraid that my kid will get lost.
늦을까 봐 걱정이 돼서 일찍 출발했어요. I am afraid that I will be late, so I left early.
남자 친구가 기분 나쁠까 봐 걱정하고 있어요. I am afraid that my boyfriend will be offended.
아빠한테 혼날까 봐 말을 할 수 없어요. I am afraid that I get scolded by my dad, so I can’t tell him.

A/V/N ~(으)ㄹ까 보다 [Korean Grammar]
Today we’ll see how to form sentences with Korean grammar pattern “(으)ㄹ까 보다” with some example sentences and it’s usage with Adj., verbs or nouns.
This blog will be helpful for those who are studying Korean language and want to improve their grammar skills.
The equivalent meaning in English could be ” It seems like (something) “, ” I’m afraid that it is (something)”.
It is attached to either an adjective, verb or noun to indicate the speaker’s concern about something.
This expression is used when you are worried or concern about something.
This pattern can be added after the Adjective stem, verb stem and nouns but there are certain rules how it has to be conjugated in different tenses ( present and past tenses ).
The rule to conjugate
Present tense :
Adj./Verb + ㄹ/을까 봐
~ㄹ까 봐 is added if the A/V stem ends with a vowel.
~을까 봐 is added when the A/V stem ends with a consonant.
For example :
1) I’m afraid the dress would be small.
드레스가 작을까 봐.
2) I’m afraid it will be bad.
나쁠까 봐 굉장하네.
3) I’m afraid I will be late.
지각을까 봐요.
Present tense :
Noun + 일까봐
Simply ~일까봐 is added after the nouns.
For example :
1) It seems like a person.
사람일까 봐.
2) It seems like my friend.
친구일까 봐.
3) Seems like an actor.
배우일까봐.
Past tense :
Adj./Verb + 았/었을까 봐
~았을까봐 is added if the A/V stem ends with 아 or 오.
~있을까 봐 Is added when the stem ends with anything other than 아 or 오.
~했을까봐 Is added after the stem ending with 하.
For example :
1) I am afraid it was expensive.
비쌌을까 봐.
2) I’m afraid it was insufficient.
부족했을까 봐.
Past tense :
Noun + 였을까 봐
~였을까 봐 is simply added after the noun.
For example :
1) It seemed like my friend.
친구였을까 봐.
2) It seemed like a singer.
가수였을까 봐.
Following are the examples of the grammar patterns mentioned above.
1) It is late so I am thinking of taking a taxi.
늦었는데 택시를 탈까보다.
2) It looked like he might fall so I held his hand and went.
넘어 질까 봐 손을 잡고 갔어요.
3) I didn’t want to lose the money so I put it deep inside my briefcase.
돈을 잃어 버릴 까봐 가방 속에 깊이 넣었어요.
4) I thought it might cause a misunderstanding so I didn’t say anything.
오해 할까 봐 말하지 않았습니다.
5) Are you afraid to go home because you think you will be scolded?
야단 맞을까 봐 집에 못 들어 가니?
I’m worried that/about, so…: 을까 봐
A/V + 을까 봐 is used to express concern about something. The sense of worry is often implied but can be made explicit with 걱정되다:
제가 비행기 표가 너무 비쌀까 봐…
제가 비행기 표가 너무 비쌀까 봐 격정돼요.
I’m worried that the plane ticket will be too expensive…
시간이 충분히 없을까 봐…
I’m worried that there won’t be enough time…
한국에서 이사할까 봐…
I was worried about moving to Korea…
A/V + 을까 봐 can also be followed by a second clause that acts as a solution – ‘I’m worried that/about, so…’:
비가 올까 봐 우산을 가져왔어요.
I worried that it would rain so I brought my umbrella.
버스를 놓칠까 봐 일찍 집을 나갔어요.
I was worried that i would miss the bus, so I left home early.
파일들을 날려 버릴까 봐 다른 컴퓨터들에서 저장했어요.
I was worried about losing my files, so I saved them on different computers.

문법 – Hướng dẫn dùng cấu trúc ngữ pháp (으)ㄹ까 보다 [을까 봐(서)]. Cấu trúc thể hiện việc có ý đồ sẽ thực hiện hành động mà vế trước thể hiện hoặc sự lo lắng hoặc quan ngại sẽ trở thành tình huống mà vế trước thể hiện. 어떤 상황이나 사실을 그럴 것 같다고 추측함.
Cách dùng cấu trúc ngữ pháp (으)ㄹ까 보다
Ngữ pháp (으)ㄹ까 보다 hay còn được viết là 을까 봐(서) thuộc nhóm ngữ pháp dự đoán, phỏng đoán. Cụ thể nó có 2 ý nghĩa được dùng, một là thể hiện việc có ý đồ sẽ thực hiện hành động nào đó mà có liên quan hay do vế 1. 앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 행동을 할 의도가 있음을 나타내는 표현. Hai là thể hiện sự lo lắng hoặc quan ngại sẽ trở thành tình huống mà vế trước nhắc tới. 앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 상황이 될 것을 걱정하거나 두려워함을 나타내는 표현.
Trường hợp 1: (으)ㄹ까 봐 thể hiện việc có ý đồ sẽ thực hiện hành động nào đó có liên quan do cái vế 1. 앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 행동을 할 의도가 있음을 나타내는 표현. Định, dự định.
1. 아무래도 약속 시간에 늦을 것 같은데, 택시를 탈까 봐.
Dù sao chắc cũng muộn thời gian đã hẹn rồi, tôi định đi taxi.
2. 몸도 좋지 않으니 오늘은 아무 데도 안 나가고 집에서 좀 쉴까 봐요.
Thấy cơ thể không được tốt, hôm nay dù thế nào đi chăng nữa (dù có việc gì đi chăng nữa) cũng không ra ngoài ở nhà nghỉ thôi.
3. 이번 주말에는 오랜만에 고향에 다녀올까 봐.
Cuối tuần này định về quê lâu lắm rồi không về.
Trường hợp 2: (으)ㄹ까 보다 thể hiện sự lo lắng hoặc quan ngại sẽ trở thành tình huống nào đó do vấn đề ở vế trước. 앞에 오는 말이 나타내는 상황이 될 것을 걱정하거나 두려워함을 나타내는 표현.
1. 아기가 깰까 봐(서) 조용히 이야기했어요.
Sợ đứa bé tỉnh dậy nên đã nói chuyện một cách im ắng
2. 풍선이 터질까 봐 무서워요.
Gần như nổ quả bóng bay sợ quá.
3. 회의 시간에 늦을까 봐(서) 뛰어 왔어요.
Sợ muộn buổi họp nên đã chạy gấp đến
4. 부모님께서 걱정하실까 봐 말씀을 안 드렸어요.
Sợ bố mẹ lo nghĩ nên đã không nói.
5. 표가 없을까 봐 미리 예매했어요.
Sợ không còn vé nên đã đặt trước rồi.
6. 음식이 부족할까 봐 많이 하라고 했어요.
Sợ thiếu đồ ăn nên đã chuẩn bị nhiều
7. 저녁에 추울까 봐 옷을 하나 더 가져왔어요.
Sợ tối sẽ lạnh nên đã mang theo thêm 1 cái áo
8. 가: 무슨 일이 있어요? 기분이 안 좋아 보여요.
Có chuyện gì vậy? Thấy tâm trạng không tốt lắm?
나: 가방을 잃어버렸는데 (못 찾을까 봐) 걱정이 돼서 그래요
Quên mất cái túi/cặp rồi sợ không tìm được đó
9. 가: 커피 안 마셔요?
Không uống cafe à?
나: 밤에 잠이 안 (올까 봐) 저녁에는 커피를 안 마셔요.
Sợ tối đến không ngủ được nên chiều tối không có uống cafe
10. 가: 왜 이렇게 일찍 왔어요?
Sao đến sớm thế này?
나: 공연을 앞에서 보고 싶은데 자리가 (없을 까봐) 일찍 왔어요.
Muốn xem buổi công diễn đó mà sợ hết chỗ nên đến sớm
11. 가: 왜 이렇게 늦었어요?
Sao đến muộn thế này?
나: 약속 시간에 늦을까 봐 택시를 탔는데 오다가 사고가 났어요.
Đã sợ muộn giờ hẹn nên đi taxi rồi mà đang đi lại có xảy ra tai nạn.
가: 어머, 다치지 않았어요? 큰일 날 뻔했네요.
Ô trời, không có bị thương ở đâu chứ? Suýt thì lớn chuyện.
